Job description:
1. The Coimbra branch of LIP (Laboratório de Instrumentação e Física Experimental de Partículas) offers a Technicien contract within the project GLOSS (Gamma-ray Laue Optics and Solid State detectors) financed by the PRODEX programme of the European Space Agency. GLOSS? main objective is to study LEO environment effects on future gamma-ray telescopes? sensors. Herein, we intend to investigate radiation damage and ageing effects on the performances of different instrument materials in real in-orbit conditions, allowing to estimate the effective lifetime of instrument components developed for high-energy astrophysics? scientific future space missions. The proposed materials to be study in the GLOSS proposal are Ge and Si Laue lens crystals, and CdZnTe (CZT) sensor elements, since these materials compose the main subsystems of the Laue lens and of the focal plane, respectively, of ASTENA mission concept and AMEGO calorimeter is composed by CZT detectors. The project?s objectives are:
- Uncover new data on material?s ageing for the Si/Ge based Laue lens systems in LEOs for future gamma-ray space missions;
- Improve the quality and the accuracy of the data of material?s ageing for the CZT based detectors in LEOs for future gamma-ray space missions.
2. Application requirements:
The applicant should have a master?s degree in physics engineering. Candidates should have experience operating with X- or gamma-ray detectors and detector design. It is considered an advantage the experience with simulation tools such as GEANT4 or MEGALIB.
3. Work plan:
GLOSS? main objective is to study LEO environment effects on future gamma-ray telescopes? sensors. The successful applicant will perform scientific testing of on the crystal samples and will contribute to the simulation work providing input from testing data.
