A call is open to award one research grant for one PhD student to develop research activities within the I&D Project STAND4HERITAGE (Project Number: 833123) – New Standards for Seismic Assessment of Built Cultural Heritage, funded by the European Commission (European Research Council) through its research and innovation Horizon 2020, in the following conditions:
Research Field: Civil Engineering
Application requirements: Candidates must have, at the date of application, the degree of Master in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or similar areas, with a final average higher or equal to 70%. In addition, on the date of the respective hiring, candidates must prove their enrolment in the following course:
- PhD Programme in Civil Engineering
Candidates must be proficient in written and spoken English.
Eligibility criteria: Candidates must fulfil the eligibility criteria defined in point 9º of the ?Regulamento de Bolsas de Investigação Científica da Universidade do Minho?, published at ?Diário da República n.º 119/2020, Série II de 2020-06-22?.
Work plan:
1) Generate a representative variation of ground motion records (both source and structure-sensitive);
2) Examine the influence of the signal on the dynamic (seismic) behavior of masonry structures.
Applicable legislation and regulations: ?Status of the scientific researcher fellow?, approved by Law nº 40/2004 of 18th of August, in its current form published by Decree-Law nº 123/2019 of 28th of August); ?Regulamento de Bolsas de Investigação Científica da Universidade do Minho?, published at ?Diário da República n.º 119/2020, Série II de 2020-06-22?.
Work place: The research work will be developed at the School of Engineering of University of Minho (ISISE ? Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering), under the scientific supervision of Professor Paulo B. Lourenço.
Duration of the Grant: The grant will have a duration of 12 months, with the beginning planned for September 1, 2020. The grant contract may be renewed until the end of the project and/or applicable legislation.
Monthly Allowance: The monthly allowance corresponds to 1200 euro (tax free), according to the ?Regulamento de Bolsas da Universidade do Minho?.
Other benefits: Reimbursement of Voluntary Social Security, corresponding to the 1st Level of the contributory base (for scholarships lasting 6 months or more), Personal Accident Insurance. In case of students enrolled in a doctorate course, the payment of tuition fees related to the study cycle of doctor of degree during the term of the scholarship may be eligible.
Selection criteria: The evaluation of applications will focus on the candidate’s Merit, applying the following evaluation criteria, expressed in a scale from 0 and 5.
Candidate’s Merit – MC (100%):
a) Academic performance – 45%
b) Scientific production (papers, reports, etc.) – 20%
c) Previous experience in the masonry and earthquake engineering – 25%
d) Proficiency in English (EN) – 10%
MC=(a*0,45)+(b*0,2)+(c*0,25) +(d*0,1)
Candidates with MC less than 3.5 points are immediately excluded.
The Selection Committee reserves the right not to award the research fellowship in the competition based on the evaluation results of the applicants and their suitability for the project objectives.
The selected candidate, if having academic higher education degrees obtained outside Portugal, is responsible for applying for recognition of the foreign higher education degrees in Portugal (BSc and MSc) and the conversion to the grades to the Portuguese grading system within 3 months of starting of the grant.
The applicants with academic higher education degrees obtained abroad are exempted, at the application and selection moments, from providing the recognition of their higher education degrees in Portugal and the conversion of the grades to the Portuguese grading system.

If the President is unavailable, he shall be replaced by the first effective member, and the substitute member shall replace the other effective member.
Publicitation/notification of results: The proposed results, including the official records, will be transmitted to all applicants using e-mail, up to 90 work days after the deadline for applications.
In case of unfavourable results, applicants have 10 working days to inquire the selection committee, in this preliminary hearing, according to section 121º and 122º from ?Código do Procedimento Administrativo (DL nº 4/2015 de 7 de janeiro)?.
Appeal: Final results will be placed at the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Minho. Candidates will also be notified by email, including the official records of the selection process.
The selected candidate should reply (in writing) his/her intention to accept the scholarship. In case of refusal, the scholarship will be given to the next applicant in the final ranking.
The final results may be appealed, up to 15 working days, and addressed to the President of the Selection Committee. This appeal may also be addressed to the Vice-Dean, Professor Filipe Vaz.
Application period and structure of the application: The call is open from 04/05/2021 to 17/05/2021.
Applications must be made through an application letter together with the following documents:
- Curriculum Vitae;
- Certificates of all higher education degrees (an English notarized translation must be given in case the selection committee is unable to understand the document, e.g. if Latin or Roman script is not used in an original certificate);
- MSc thesis (or theses if more than one);
- Publications;
- Other documents that the candidate considers relevant for the analysis of the application.
